5 SIGNS YOU NEED A NEW WATER SOFTENER

Water Softener Replacement

Hard water refers to a water supply that contains high amounts of minerals, especially calcium and magnesium. When found in your pipes, hard water can wreak havoc on your plumbing system, clog drains and prevent soap and detergent from dissolving properly.

That’s why many homes need to have a water softener, a purification system that “softens” the water by removing excess minerals. Your water softener plays a key role in preventing pipe corrosion and blockages and keeping your plumbing system in good condition. If you suspect there may be a problem, you should call a professional plumbing service right away. Here are five signs that your water softener may need to be replaced: 1. You spot scale buildup on pipes and appliances Scale, or limescale, is a hard, chalky substance made up of calcium and magnesium bicarbonate that builds up on tiled surfaces, plumbing fixtures and inside your pipes. If you notice scale on the outside of your appliances, it’s very likely that it’s also in your pipes and water heater, where it can restrict water flow and cause corrosion. Stains from mineral deposits on sinks and bathtubs are another telltale sign of hard water. 2. Your skin and hair feels unusually dry If your hair and skin feel unusually dry and itchy when you get out of the shower, it could be caused by the hardness of your water. The minerals found in hard water can dry out your skin and hair and even worsen existing skin conditions. 3. Skyrocketing utility bills When scale builds up in your pipes and water heater, your plumbing system has to work harder, which means your water and energy usage will increase, leading to spikes in your bills each month. If you notice you’re paying significantly more for utilities, it may be time to have a plumber inspect your water softening system. 4. Grey, faded or stiff clothes If you notice that your clothes are starting to look grey and faded, or if they constantly feel worn or stiff after washing, you probably have a problem with your water softener. Hard water is less effective for washing clothes and can take a toll on fabrics. If you’re experiencing problems with hard water and require a new water softener, get in touch with Tiger Plumbing.
