WATER SOFTENER VS. WATER FILTER: WHICH IS BETTER FOR YOUR HOME?

Water Softener or Water Filter?

Water softeners and water filters are both water purification systems that help to protect your pipes and extend the life of your plumbing system.

However, water softening and water filtration are two distinct processes that serve different purposes and are suited for different situations. Here’s what you need to know about the differences between water softeners and water filters and how to make the right choice between them for your home

Water softeners

A water softener is a purification system that “softens” hard water by removing excess minerals, namely calcium and magnesium. Removing these minerals from the water supply is important for protecting your plumbing system because the minerals in hard water can cause corrosion and blockages in your pipes. A softener is also important because water that’s too hard takes a toll on your skin, hair and clothes.

Water filters

A water filter can refer to any system that purifies water by removing various contaminants. These contaminants include metals such as arsenic, iron or copper; industrial or pharmaceutical by-products like pesticides or hormones and dirt or organic debris. Purifying the water in your plumbing system makes it more suitable for drinking, bathing and cleaning and less likely to cause problems in your pipes.

Water softening vs. filtration: which system to choose?

Whether you chose a water softener or a water filter for your home’s water purification system should depend on the type of water-related issues you experience. For instance, if you notice the buildup of limescale on your plumbing fixtures and mineral deposits on sinks and tubs, you most likely have a problem with hard water. As a result, you should invest in a water softener that will prevent scale from forming and protect your pipes from corrosive minerals.

On the other hand, if you notice that your water has a strange taste or smell (such as a metallic aftertaste or a faint smell of sulphur), it’s probably best to go for a water filter that will rid your water of the contaminants causing the problem. Chlorine and Chloramines are usually present in city water systems. Removing them with a whole house carbon filter is better for consumption and laundry as well as bathing.
